On October 13, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel via video link. They reviewed the development of China-German and China-EU relations in recent years in a friendly atmosphere and had an in-depth exchange of views over relevant issues.

Merkel was an old friend of Chinese people and she intended to soon conclude her 16 years in office as German Chancellor, Xi said. As the Chinese people put a premium on friendship, said Xi, China will not forget old friends and will always keep the door open for Merkel. And Xi expressed warm welcome to Merkel to visit China after retirement and his expectation for face to face communication.

Two leaders made acquaintance in 2009 when Xi was in a visit to German. The Chinese president said they have had multiple in-depth exchanges of views on bilateral relations, major international and regional issues and state governance, among other topics, which have advanced bilateral ties and ensured collaboration between the two countries in responding to global challenges.

Xi remarked that Merkel had an insight on Chinese conditions, relation and cooperation between China and German. Xi appreciated Merkel’s interest in China because she had visited different places in China and she also showed interest in Sichuan Spicy Hot Pot. 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and Xi hoped that these achievements and friendship of two countries can continue.
