I can no longer remember exactly which year it was, but I still remember a seventeen-year-old boy from Shantou who was diagnosed with thymic carcinoma, and his aunt found me through one of my friends in Shantou, hoping that I could help them arrange medical treatment for him in Guangzhou. Although we were strangers who met by chance, I still tried my best to reach out to specialists at Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center and Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital to seek the best possible treatment for him. One day, the boy’s aunt called me for help because his condition got worse. I immediately asked my driver to take me straight to the Emergency department of Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital. My heart broke when I saw how weak he was, and his family was overwhelmed with despair. Then I said to the boy “What you’re going through is a trail that life has placed before your family. You have to hold on -- for your aunt, for your parents, for everyone in this world who loves you. You are a strong and sensible young man. Next year, you’ll be going to college.” At the same day, I told my driver to hurry back to the company, ask the finance department to withdraw 100,000 yuan in cash, and bring it to me right away because I wanted to help the family get him admitted to the ICU. We knew each other just for a month. The next day, the boy’s aunt came to my office because she insisted on handing back the 100,000 yaun to me. She said to me “I believe we will remain friends for life, and his family will do whatever it takes to have him admitted to the ICU”. A year later, the boy passed away in Guangzhou. During the COVID years, in 2022, the boy’s aunt transferred some money to my account twice because she was worried that our company might be facing financial difficulties. Later, I returned both transfers to her. I remained deeply grateful to her kindness, and I thought the bond between us was something arranged by fate. In 2023, before the opening ceremony of the Sino-Euro Global Forum in Xiamen, she mailed two necklaces as a gift to my office in Guangzhou. For an ordinary family, a seriously ill child can turn life into a nightmare. We are all ordinary people, and although our paths crossed by chance, I felt it was only right to lend a helping hand. Any doctor or organization that enrich themselves with money meant for the sick will ultimately be consumed by their own greed. What makes a doctor wicked? If you profits enormously from the suffering of patients and still expect their gratitude, then you have abandoned everything a doctor is supposed to stand for. Patients do not expect doctors to be saints. They simply ask the doctors to be decent human beings-- to treat people with conscience and integrity.
