The greatest Master of Spinal Tumor Prof. Stefano Boriani is coming to china on April 19th. He is the first visiting professor of the highest level after the epidemic outbreak. He’s going to distinguish himself at this visit, which is known to and excites many Chinese Orthopedics Experts. This visit is definitely of extraordinary and profound significance!

Dr. med. Stefano Boriani had been an attending surgeon at Rizzoli Institute in Bologna (I) from February 1978 to 1988, then promoted as a Senior Surgeon till 1996 and he took the chair of sub-unit of Oncologic Spine Surgery in the Department of Bone Tumor Surgery. From April to September, 1996 he had been the head of Department of Spine Surgery at Istituto Santa Corona di Pietra Ligure (SV). From 1996 to 2009, he had been the head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology Ospedale Maggiore in Bologna. From 2009 to 2017, he had been the head of the Department of Oncologic and Degenerative Spine Surgery at Rizzoli Institute in Bologna. Currently, Dr. Boriani is Head of Spine Tumor Surgery of the GSpine4 Spine Surgery Unit and Director of Spinal Teaching Program at IRCCS Galeazzi Orthopedic Institute.

At present, there are 15 doctors, 2 Chief Physicians, 6 Deputy Chief Physicians, 5 Attending Physicians, 2 Resident Doctors, including 4 Doctors and 5 Masters in Spine Surgery Department of Jiangmen Central Hospital. After several generations of unremitting pursuit, exploration and efforts, the professional team has been gradually expanding, and the technical strength has been continuously enhanced, establishing a clinical base that integrates medical treatment, scientific research, teaching and prevention. In 2011, it was awarded as the key clinical specialty of Jiangmen City and our hospital. At present, there are 78 fixed beds with 100% utilization rate in our department, receiving patients who suffer from diseases of spinal surgery, including lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spondylolisthesis, spinal canal stenosis, cervical spondylosis, pain caused by osteoporosis and vertebral compression fracture, scoliosis, spinal node nucleus, spinal fracture dislocation, spinal cord injury and spinal tumor.
Disciplinary Leader -- Zhongxian Chen, the Director and Chief Physician of Spine Surgery Department Jiangmen Central Hospital is a member of multiple scientific societies, such as a Standing Committee Member of Spinal Surgery branch of Guangdong Medical Association; Vice Chairman of Osteoporosis branch of Guangdong Medical Association; Vice Chairman of Osteoporosis Management branch of Guangdong Medical Association; Committee member of Pain and Minimally Invasive Surgery branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association; Standing Committee Member of Spinal surgery branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association; Committee member of Spine Surgery branch of Guangdong Association of the Integration of Traditional and Western Medicine, etc.
He has profound experience on the diagnossis and treatment for degenerative diseases of spine (cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spondylolisthesis, cervical lumbar spinal stenosis for instance), spinal cord injury, spinal tuberculosis, spinal and intraspinal tumors, scoliosis, osteoporosis.
Currently, he is putting primary focus on the development of the technology for minimally invasive surgery of spine, such as vertebroplasty, foraminal technique, channel assisted lumbar decompression, fusion and internal fixation. He has won 3 third prizes of Jiangmen Science and Technology Progress Award and published more than 20 papers.
In the early 1990s, our department successively carried out anterior and posterior operations for cervical trauma and cervical spondylosis, anterior and posterior operations for thoracolumbar fractures, tuberculosis and tumors, surgical correction for spinal deformity, open reduction and internal fixation for pelvic and acetabular fractures, hip and knee replacement and micro invasive treatment for femoral head necrosis. Our department continues to strengthen its own construction, and has successively purchased advanced equipment such as lumbar disc mirror (MED), X-tube spine minimally invasive system of American pivot method model, quadrant spine minimally invasive system, MaxMorespine intervertebral foramen system, bone density detector, bone injury treatment instrument, Ziehm C-arm X-ray machine, intraoperative neuroelectrophysiological monitor, etc. With the support of superior hospitals and its brother hospitals, aiming at the leading edge technology of spine surgery, we have successively carried out the replacement of artificial lumbar intervertebral disc and artificial nucleus pulposus, anterior and posterior reconstruction and internal fixation of cervical spine, anterior and posterior reconstruction and internal fixation of thoracic and lumbar spine, and resection of spinal tumor focus and bone grafting and reconstruction and internal fixation. Especially in the area of minimally invasive surgery, our department has developed new technologies such as percutaneous laser ablation (PLDD), percutaneous vertebroplasty, channel assisted spinal decompression, fusion and internal fixation, and percutaneous borescope in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation.
At present, the number of inpatients in our department is increasing, and the number of surgery is also increasing. Each year, the number of surgical cases reaches more than 1000. In the aspect of minimally invasive surgery, percutaneous vertebroplasty was carried out to treat the elderly osteoporotic compression fracture and spinal tumor in 2007, the technology of intervertebral foramen was more accurate and more efficient to meet the needs of patients in 2015. There are many well educated doctors in our department with strong innovation ability and learning ability, which is more conducive to improving the operation and development of new technologies. Meanwhile, under the leadership of the Department Director, we actively pay attention to and keep up with the new trends of spine surgery technology at home and abroad, and constantly carry out new technologies and projects, so as to maintain a leading position of technical capabilities in Wuyi region.
Many Orthopedic academic leaders of spine in Jiangmen City are employed by the Spine Surgery Department where is also the teaching base for orthopedic postgraduates of Sun Yat-sen University and established a workstation for orthopedic postdotors. We vigorously support postgraduate training and all kinds of day-releasing courses and semi day-releasing courses, pay close attention to basic theory and basic skills, encourage doctors to study abroad at famous hospitals in a planned way, which will improve their learning and continuously enhance their ability as dispatching personnel to attend practical and advanced short-term courses will allow them to acquire more knowledge in a efficient way. Our department also undertakes the clinical teaching tasks of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Medical University, Guangzhou Medical University and other medical peers in and out of the province, and accepts personnel for further study who are still under employment in Wuyi area.
Since 2005, our department has carried out more than 20 scientific research projects, including 6 provincial and ministerial projects, published more than 60 medical academic papers, participated in the compilation of 2 orthopedic monographs, and published 7 papers in foreign journals (SCI included), won 4 third prizes for Scientific and Technological Achievements of Jiangmen Municipal People's Government.
