
On November 14, 2025, Prof. Bornstein, Director of Medical Clinic and Polyclinic III and the Center for Internal Medicine at University Hospital of TU Dresden, Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and Dean of TransCampus of King's College London and Technical University of Dresden, was invited to visit the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University and conduct a one-day academic exchange event. Prof. SHEN Jie, President of the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University and the Endocrinology and Metabolism Team extended their warm welcome to Prof. Bornstein’s visit.

In the morning, accompanied by Prof. SHEN Jie and her team, Prof. Bornstein visited several key departments and facilities of the hospital, including the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the National Metabolic Management Center (MMC), the hospital cockpit, and the research center.

During the visit, the hospital introduced its “Regional Diabetes Management Map,” a system that provides real-time visualization of the distribution of diabetes patients across Shunde District. Through a color-coded stratification model, the system facilitates tiered diagnosis and treatment as well as precision management of diabetes.

At the following meeting, Prof. LIU Lan, Director of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, presented an overview of the hospital and the department, with particular emphasis on the achievements in developing the sub-specialty of Type 1 diabetes. Prof. Bornstein highly commended the accomplishments of the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University in the field of diabetes care. He also shared his team’s clinical and research experience in diabetes, highlighting the latest advances in Type 1 diabetes, islet cell transplantation, artificial pancreas systems, and stem cell research. He also shared that Prof. Peter Schwarz, President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), is also a member of his department, and very looked forward to a closer collaboration with Chinese colleagues in the field of diabetes.

In the afternoon, Prof. Bornstein was invited to attend the 2025 Academic Summary Conference of the 4th Expert Committee on Endocrine and Metabolic Medication of Guangdong Pharmaceutical Association(GDPA), where he delivered a keynote lecture entitled “Diabetes and Endocrine Disease and the Role of Infection”. The session was marked by lively discussion and in-depth exchanges with participating experts and scholars.


In the evening, the event for World Diabetes Day 2025 and the 6th Shunde Blue Light Action was warmly held at OCT Harbour Plus. Accompanied by Prof. SHEN Jie, Prof. Bornstein joined dozens of diabetes experts from hospitals across China in the lighting ceremony of the “Shunde Eye.” Wearing blue ribbons symbolizing health and hope and holding blue flags, they also participated in a unique health-themed walkathon.


Prof. Bornstein’s team enjoys a distinguished reputation in the field of diabetes treatment in Europe and is recognized as one of the leading centers for the research and management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and the complications. This visit will further promote in-depth exchanges and collaboration between Prof. Bornstein and Chinese endocrinologists. Both sides look forward to developing more innovative partnerships in diabetes care and research in the future.
As of 2026, Prof. Bornstein has accepted eight Chinese MD candidates through Gloryren and has also hosted two outstanding physicians from a top-tier Chinese hospital for fellowship in his department.

In November 2025, Gloryren cordially invited Prof. Bornstein to attend the opening ceremony of 2025 SEOS held on November 15, and the 5th Sino-Euro Global Forum on Hospital Management, Specialty Construction & Talent Cultivation 2025 held on November 16, serving as the Member of European Presidium for the forum.
