The Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery, University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH, Giessen Site stands as one of the leading orthopedic research platforms in Germany. The research building alone represents an investment of approximately 45 million. The total value of laboratory equipment amounts to approximately 7 million.

The laboratory hosts around 50 researchers and students. The team is structured into several research groups according to scientific focus areas and maintains close collaborations with industry partners and other German universities. English is the working language, reflecting a highly international research environment.

The laboratory follows a clinically driven research philosophy: real challenges encountered in surgery are transformed into research questions, investigated in the laboratory, and then translated back into clinical application, forming a complete translational medicine loop. The relationship between supervisors and doctoral students is both professional and supportive, characterized by a focused yet relaxed atmosphere. Two Chinese doctoral students once described their mentors in two words: “always responsive.”

The lab adheres to a “quality-first” publication strategy. Rather than pursuing high publication numbers, the team prioritizes scientific impact, typically submitting to journals with impact factors between 5 and 10. In collaboration with the Cancer Center at Heidelberg University, the team published a high-impact paper with an impact factor of around 30, highlighting its academic strength in the intersection of orthopedics and oncology. Notably, the construction of the building, acquisition of equipment, and personnel expenses are primarily funded through the department’s clinical revenue, demonstrating a long-term strategic commitment to research excellence.

Mr. Ding from Yantai, Shandong Province, is the first student we have recommended to the Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery, University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH, Giessen Site for doctoral training. He completed his interview on July 2, 2025, arrived in Germany on January 9, 2026, and officially enrolled as a doctoral candidate at Justus Liebig University Giessen on February 27. Here, he gains direct access to cutting-edge research infrastructure and an experienced supervisory team, receiving systematic training and developing independent research competence, laying a solid foundation for his future career.

On June 13, 2025, the delegation team of Gloryren paid its first visit to the Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery and its research laboratories in Giessen. Prof. Heiß and Prof. El Khassawna personally welcomed us in the outpatient hall, followed by an internal meeting in Prof. Heiß’s office. Discussions focused on joint doctoral training programs, research collaboration, and visiting professorship initiatives. The professors then guided us through the research building, introducing each laboratory, major equipment platform, and research team. During the visit, we experienced firsthand the collegial atmosphere between doctoral candidates and supervisors and observed the practical implementation of their clinically driven research model. At the conclusion of the visit, Prof. Heiß presented us with a commemorative medal from the university, symbolizing the institution’s longstanding contributions to science and medicine.

On January 29, 2026, the Gloryren team conducted a second visit to the Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery and its research laboratories in Giessen. This time, discussions centered on refining the joint doctoral training mechanism, expanding research collaboration, and enhancing academic exchange programs. Prof. Heiß and Prof. El Khassawna expressed high satisfaction with Mr. Ding’s progress, noting that the cooperation process has been clear, efficient, and structurally mature. They also indicated the department’s intention to admit two additional doctoral candidates this year to further expand the partnership. Following the formal meeting, Prof. Heiß personally drove us to lunch, where conversations continued in a relaxed setting, focusing on doctoral training models, research alignment, and long-term cooperation mechanisms. Prof. El Khassawna provided further insights into the laboratory’s organizational structure, international collaborations, and high-level research output. Potential initiatives discussed included Chinese hospital delegation visits, modular workshop design, and hybrid (online and on-site) continuing education programs. Prof. Heiß confirmed his intention to visit China again in 2026 to share the department’s latest developments in trauma surgery, translational research, and talent development.

After two visits, we are more convinced than ever that truly transformative medical education is not defined by university names or rankings. What matters is access to a top-tier research platform, systematic training, the cultivation of independent scientific thinking, and the ability to translate research outcomes into clinical practice.

The ceiling of orthopedic research in Germany is here in Giessen. Our mission is to connect such high-quality platforms with medical talents who are ready to grow and make a real impact.
