Starting from 2026, we are waiting for a real transformation in the Chinese healthcare system. A great nation deserves truly compassionate doctors, because doctors reflect the conscience of a nation. In this world, only the noble calling of doctors can bathe all people with compassion and benevolence. If what you do only benefits yourself, or the interest groups behind you, and in doing so you harms the national interests. Only when the nation gains the greatest benefit and our motherland becomes strong can your own career rise steadily. The statesman and writer of the northern Song dynasty, FAN Zhongyan said: “Be the first to worry about the nation’s troubles and the last to enjoy its joys.” The scholar of the Qing dynasty, GU Yanwu said: “The rise and fall of the nation is the responsibility of every ordinary person.” I live by Li Lake in the ancient southern city of Wuxi. Three kilometers away, there is the Donglin Academy. Its founder, GU Xiancheng, once wrote: “The sounds of wind, rain, and reading enter the ear; Family affairs, state affairs, and the affairs of the world all demand our attention.” LU Xun told us: “If we do not erupt in silence, we will perish in silence.” When you witness injustice and choose to remain silent, you become complicit in it. Throughout our history, there have always been those who work tirelessly, those who fight courageously, those who speak up for the people, and those who sacrifice themselves for justice. They are the backbone of China. The scholar of northern Song dynasty ZHANG Zai said: “To ordain conscience for Heaven and Earth, to secure life and fortune for the people, to continue unfinished teachings for past sages and to open a path to lasting peace for generations to come.” This is the highest ideal that all Chinese intellectuals should pursue. Without our predecessors, there would be no ancestors; without ancestors, there would be no parents; without parents, there would be no self. Not everyone is qualified to be a doctor. Not every institution can truly be called a hospital. Because the most important mission of a hospital in any city is to ensure that people can receive proper treatment. Merely being able to see patients in an outpatient clinic, perform surgeries, speak fluent English, or hold a doctoral degree does not make someone an excellent doctor. These are superficial. They are external possessions. What truly elevates a doctor from nothing to greatness is a pure heart, kindness, noble character, a sense of gratitude, and a profound love for one’s country. China has 5.08 million doctors. Among them are those who muddle through their days, those who betray others once their goals are achieved, those who form factions, those who casually delete or block others on WeChat, those who lack basic manners, those who engage in academic fraud, association leaders who neglect their duties, those who abuse power for personal gain, those who take kickbacks or accept bribes, and even those who engage in power-for-sex transactions. These are the disorders that plague Chinese healthcare system. The critical issue is that few upright people dare to speak out against these wrongdoings. These people who are unqualified as human beings have become doctors. Patients come to the hospital and entrust their lives to them. How can such people ever truly respect life? It is such a terrifying thing that these people without good character and without bottom line have become doctors. The year of 2026 has arrived. May your past be reset. Every one of you should reflect deeply and ask yourselves: Am I truly qualified to be a doctor? Being a doctor is a profession that demands very high standards from a person. Because doctors reflect the conscience of a nation, and a nation without a conscience has no right to call itself a nation of healers. Why do I emphasize national spirit repeatedly? Every individual is small, but a nation and a people are mighty. Only when your country is strong can you gain prestige, status, and respect on the international stage.
