From September 15 to 18, Prof. Lehner, an international expert in orthopedic oncology, visited the Southern Medical University Third Hospital and the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and conducted a series of academical exchange activities, including joint outpatient consultation, joint ward rounds, surgical guidance and practice, internal training within the department, department management discussion, complex case discussion, public lectures, etc. Prof. Lehner is the Director of the Section of Orthopedic Oncology and Septic Orthopedic Surgery of Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital, and the Head of Certified Sarcoma Center Heidelberg, with high influence and reputation in the field of orthopedic oncology.

Welcome Ceremony
On the morning of September 15, a warm welcome ceremony was held at the Southern Medical University Third Hospital. Prof. WANG Liang, Vice Hospital President, Prof. LI Haomiao, the Director of the Department of Orthopedic Oncology and his team attended the ceremony and extended their warm welcome to Prof. Lehner.
Prof. WANG Liang gave his welcoming speech, expressing his appreciation for Prof. Lehner’s visit, and hoping that Prof. Lehner would provide valuable advice for the orthopedic oncology team so as to enhance international academic exchanges and cooperation.
At the welcome ceremony, the young doctors delivered their speeches all in English, introducing the basic information of the Southern Medical University Third Hospital and the Department of Orthopedic Oncology. As the Guangdong Provincial Orthopedic Research Institution and Guangdong Provincial Orthopedic Hospital, it is equipped with 9 orthopedic sub-specialties, 500 beds in the Orthopedic Center. Since the establishment of the Department of Orthopedic Oncology in 2012, it now has 38 beds and performs an average of 1500 surgeries annually, accumulating abundant clinical experience in both benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors.
Then, Prof. Lehner gave a detailed introduction of the Heidelberg University Hospital. The Clinic for Orthopedics of Heidelberg University Hospital is the biggest orthopedic university hospital in Germany. It has 120 orthopedic doctors and 300 beds, among which 40 beds are specially for the Department of Orthopedic Oncology and Septic Orthopedic Surgery. The hospital has the Sarcoma Center certified by German Cancer Society(DKG), ranking the second among Germany, and also has the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center(HIT), which focuses on high-precision cancer treatment. Prof. Lehner also shared the clinical experience of the Department of Orthopedic Oncology in the field of bone tumor, metastatic bone tumor, prosthesis reconstruction surgery and biological reconstruction, as well as the latest scientific research progress of the Sarcoma Center.
Case Discussions and Ward Rounds
On the afternoon of September 15, Prof. Lehner, with the companion of the orthopedic oncology team, visited the wards of the Department of Orthopedic Oncology as well as other orthopedic departments. After that, the young doctors reported three cases respectively on soft tissue sarcoma, osteoidosteoma, and osteosarcoma. Prof. Lehner carefully went through the patients’ imaging data, engaged in in-depth discussion with the team, and proposed detailed surgical plans and treatment suggestions.
During the ward rounds, Prof. Lehner conducted detailed physical examination for three patients and engaged the team in discussions regarding treatment plans. Following this, the young doctors in the department presented two previous cases for review and discussed them with Prof. Lehner.
The sharing and discussion session in this afternoon was superb. With frequent interactions, the in-depth academic exchanges benefited both sides greatly. Everyone extended their anticipation for further discussion with Prof. Lehner tomorrow, bringing more inspirations and breakthroughs in the field of orthopedic oncology treatment.
Chinese and German experts worked closely to complete the operation efficiently
On the morning of September 16, Prof. Lehner arrived at the operation room to collaborate with Prof.LI, Director of the Department of Orthopedic Oncology, and they successfully completed a resection surgery for a huge soft tissue sarcoma. The entire operation lasted for more than two hours and went very smoothly. Prof. Lehner had discussed with the orthopedic oncology team comprehensively during the preoperative discussion yesterday, including surgery approach, bleeding control, and fine separation tricks for tumors and peripheral blood vessels. They made a complete surgical plan. Throughout the procedure, the two professors further exchanged insights on specific operation details and shared the similarities and differences in the surgical management of soft tissue sarcoma. This facilitated a through exchange of clinical experience and expertise.
On the morning of September 17, Prof. Lehner, accompanied by Prof. LI Haomiao went to the ward to check on recovery of the patient who had undergone the surgery on previous day. After that, he entered the operation room and, together with Prof. LEI Zixiong, the chief physician, performed a tumor resection and reconstruction surgery on a young patient with osteosarcoma. During the surgery, Prof. LEI performed with great proficiency and efficiency, successfully removing the tumor while preserving the margin intact, earning high praise from Prof. Lehner. Then, the implantation of prosthesis was also completed successfully, and the surgery was completed smoothly with under good bleeding control.
Internal lecture
At the lecture session on the afternoon of September 17, the orthopedic oncology team get together in the hall. Prof. Lehner gave two lectures respectively on “Long-term results of tumor prostheses around the knee following tumor resection” and “Periprosthetic infection - Tumor Endoprosthesis Knee”.
In the first lecture, Prof. Lehner conducted an in-depth analysis on the reason for the failure of prostheses by literature review, with a focus on postoperative condition of Distal Femoral Replacement(DFR) and Proximal Tibial Replacement (PTR), and the relevant in vitro research on joint prostheses in his department.
In the second lecture, Prof. Lehner focused on sharing his team’s clinical experience in the treatment of periprosthetic infection, and introduced categorization of infection and standardized treatment flowchat of the infection. He mentioned that, in Heidelberg University Hospital, besides setting up tumor board, an infection board was specially established, with the participation of infection disease experts, microbiologists, pharmacists, and orthopedic surgeons. Individualized plans will be made for each patient, thus forming a systematic and complete treatment model.
After the lecture, Prof. Lehner actively interacted with the doctors and engaged in in-depth discussion on relevant infection cases. Everyone found the session highly rewarding. Prof. Lehner noted that orthopedic oncology is a highly challenging specialty, and that enhancing international exchange is highly beneficial for the development of the discipline. He looked forward to future collaboration with Chinese colleagues. Finally, Prof. Lehner took a group photo with the orthopedic oncology team, bringing this three-day exchange activities to a successful conclusion.
The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine
On September 18, Prof. Lehner visited the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine as an international visiting professor, to conduct a full-day academic exchange event with the orthopedic oncology team. In the morning, Prof. FANG Bin, Director of the Department Orthopedic Oncology and his team, held a welcome ceremony for Prof. Lehner at the meeting room of Orthopedic Center.
At the welcome ceremony, Prof. FANG gave Prof. Lehner a detailed introduction about the development and current situation of the hospital and the Orthopedic Department. Since its establishment in 1988, the hospital has set up 13 orthopedic sub-specialties, each specialty conducted different treatment techniques, especially the diagnosis and treatment system that integrates traditional Chinese and Western medicine.
Following that, Prof. Lehner gave a detailed introduction to the Heidelberg University Hospital, the structure of the Orthopedic Department as well as the Section of Orthopedic Oncology and Septic Orthopedic Surgery of Clinic for Orthopedics, the Sarcoma Center, clinical focus and main research direction. Then he conducted a thorough sharing on many cases of bone and soft tissue tumors. Prof. Lehner also mentioned a promising scientific research project - SARCure2030, hoping that they can increase the survival rate of sarcoma patients by 50% within next decade.
After the sharing session, Prof. FANG and the young doctors in his department accompanied Prof. Lehner on ward rounds, and visited the hospital and the Department of Orthopedic Oncology .
At the afternoon lecture session, orthopedic oncology experts and young doctors from Guangdong province gathered together to engage in academic exchanges in orthopedic oncology, including the orthopedic oncology team of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine; ZHANG Xiayi, the Deputy Secretary of the hospital's Party committee; Prof. WANG Zhen from the Department of Orthopedic Oncology at Xijing Hospital; Prof. YIN Junqiang, Director of the Department of Orthopedic Oncology at the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University; Prof. ZHANG Baoqing, Deputy Director of Department of Knee and Joint at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Prof. ZHANG Yu, Director of Department of Orthopedic Oncology at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, and his team.
At the meeting, Prof. Lehner gave two lectures respectively on “Long-term results of tumor prostheses around the knee following tumor resection” and “Periprosthetic infection - Tumor Endoprosthesis Knee”.
Then, Prof. Wang gave lecture on “Tumor recurrence around the prosthesis after limb salvage surgery” and discussed several complex cases with Prof. Lehner. The academic atmosphere on the spot was very intense. Finally, the young doctors from the Department of Orthopedic Oncology reported two tumor prosthesis infection cases and had an in-depth discussion with Prof. Lehner about the following treatment plans.
At the end of the academic exchange, Prof. Fang sincerely extended invitation to Prof. Lehner to visit China again in the future, in the hope of enhancing mutual cooperation and joint discussion on clinical techniques and cutting-edge research progress for bone tumor treatment. Prof. Lehner also extended an invitation to all the experts and young doctors, welcoming them to Heidelberg for more in-depth academic exchanges and cooperation.
