From September 16th to 20th , 2019, Prof. Dr. med. Hans Roland Dürr, who is the Director of Orthopedic Oncology and Department of Orthopaedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Hospital of Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich is carrying out series of academic exchange at Foshan Hospital of TCM, including making ward rounds, providing surgical guidance, operations, department training, discussion on department management and difficult cases.

Prof. Dürr has been in charge of the Bone Tumor Department, which is the mainstay of Hospital of LMU Munich. Sino-Euro Communication Center for Bone Tumor Officially Established

Foshan Hospital of TCM held an opening ceremony for the establishment of Sino-Euro Communication Center for Bone Tumor on 16th September, which was presided by Wumin Chan, the Chief of Medical Department;Xiaofang  Liu, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Foshan Hospital of TCM; Kuangyang Yang, Associate President of Foshan Hospital of TCM; Honggang Guan. Director of Orthopaedics Department; Feng Wu , Associate Director of Orthopaedics Department; Yongqiang Lao, Director of Osteopathy Department and others.

Kuangyang Yang, Associate President of Foshan Hospital of TCM, addressed that signing contract with Prof. Dürr, who is an internationally renowned orthopedic oncologist is their great pleasure and and Prof. Dürr will be their third foreign visiting professor. They will build up a partnership of bone tumor specialty, which will promote further exchanges and collaboration of bone tumor undertaking between Germany and China and benefits the masses more.

Xiaofang Liu, President of Foshan Hospital of TCM gave Prof. Dürr the uniform of their hospital, and hope that Foshan Hospital of TCM can continue to reach more climax together with Prof. Dürr.

After the welcome ceremony, Dr.Haiwen Pan presented the development and constructions of the whole hospital and Osteopathy Department.

In recent years, Osteopathy Department has been energetically introducing the most advanced technologies and the most recent researches concerning osteopathy and bone tumor, including highly difficult operations such as resection and reconstruction of tumor on hips, limb salvage of malignant bone tumor and prosthesis replacement and reconstruction of large tumor of hip and knee have achieved outstanding results. And Prof. Dürr acknowledges such achievement they have made.

In the afternoon, Prof. Dürr met with other faculties of Osteopathy Department and got to know the basic structure of the department. Afterwards, the team of the department introduced all the surgeries they were about to operate in the whole week and discussed surgical plans with Prof. Dürr on them.

The Operation displays Master Surgical Skills

Prof. Dürr arrived early in the morning on 17^th September to prepare for the surgery. The patient suffered from bone metastasis of renal caner, who received resection of tumor segment on proximal femoral and replacement of prosthesis. Prof. Dürr was the chief surgeon for the surgery and the surgery went extremely well. During the process, Prof. Dürr showcased sophisticated control and professional techniques, helping the the team member of their department participating in the operation learned a lot.

Solving Difficult and Complicated Cases at Outpatient Clinic

Prof. Dürr checked up on the patient in the next day as soon as he arrived at the department.

After the surgery, Prof. Dürr was concerned about the prognosis of the patient. He carefully check the surgical wound to make sure there is no infection and it was healing well. The patient thanked Prof. Dürr for being so patient and thoughtful, which all thanks to Foshan Hospital of TCM for hiring such an outstanding orthopedic oncologist, enabling him to receive proper treatment. 

Prof. Dürr arrived at the outpatient clinic afterwards. There were about 20 patients and everyone was amazed by his patience and accurate diagnosis.

There is one special patient, whose mother has been turning to countless hospitals to seek for diagnosis but failed to be accurately diagnosed thus the patient has been suffering from pain for years. Knowing that this internationally renowned orthopedic oncologist - Prof. Dürr - is working as a visiting professor at Foshan Hospital of TCM, they come to the outpatient clinic to get some treatment in particular from the renowned specialist. 

Prof. Dürr quickly came to the conclusion that it is a very rare disease called chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO).  It is often misdiagnosed as tumor clinically. Prof. Dürr also provided targeted treatment plan and calmed the patient.

The patient and her mother are extremely appreciative to Prof. Dürr for treating the disease the patient had suffered for years. The next day they brought a fruit basket to Prof. Dürr to express the gratitude they have.

Difficult Case Discussion Conveying Advanced Philosophy of Diagnosis and Treatment

 On September 19th, Prof. Dürr performed 3 surgeries at Foshan Hospital of TCM. The first one is resection of spindle cell sarcoma segment on upper left femur and reconstruction of proximal femur with prosthesis; the second one is curettage and inactivation of giant cell tumor of left distal tibia and bone allograft with cement filling; the last one is curettage and inactivation of giant cell tumor of tendinous sheath on the left ankle joint, all presenting adept and superb techniques.

In the afternoon, Prof. Dürr participated in the MDT case discussion, providing professional suggestions on diagnosis and treatment based on the experience in his medical career.

Special Training and Management of The Department

On September 20th, Prof. Dürr arrived at the department early in the morning to check up on the three patients who had undergone surgeries yesterday.

Prof. Dürr shared some typical cases from his department at Hospital of LMU, Munich and introduced their ways of treatment and their prosthesis system. Prof. Dürr also introduced how they divide works between each departments and discussed how to improve the management of Foshan Hospital of TCM.

Although this is the first time that Prof. Dürr come to work at Foshan Hospital of TCM, the harmonious relationship between doctors and patients and the hospital characterized with traditional Chinese medicine impressed him a lot.

Prof. Dürr experienced acupuncture and moxibustion the first day he arrived at the hospital and said:“In fact, traditional Chinese medicine is widely accepted in Germany as well. For example, acupuncture is mostly applied to analgesia in Germany, but here in China, there are multiple forms of acupuncture and applied to treat more diseases.”

Meanwhile, he also thanked the hospital for inviting him to be a visiting professor at Osteopathy Department, “What impresses me the most is the relationship between patients and doctors is equal harmonious. It takes a lot to give every patient considerate care for such a large hospital like Foshan Hospital of TCM.”

Dr. Yongqiang Lao addressed: “we will continue to push forward our team to have deeper communications with international experts and introduce more advanced technology and philosophies for the management of departments. We will serve our patients well and help our hospital to implement the "Climbing Plan", which is to build a high-level hospital.
