At 17:00 of June 5th, the team of three from Gloryren visited the University Medical Center Mainz to meet with Prof. Pfeiffer, Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the former CEO of the University Medical Center Mainz, and the former Director of the Department of Ophthalmology. Prof. Pfeiffer served as the Director of the Department of Ophthalmology for nearly 30 years and the CEO of the hospital for as long as 14 years, witnessing and promoting the development and take - off of the hospital. As soon as we entered the hospital, the building of the Department of Ophthalmology was right in front of us. It has 9 floors, which is enough to reflect the importance of the Department of Ophthalmology in the overall structure of the hospital. We walked into the administrative office of the Department of Ophthalmology on the upper floor. The annual team photos of the department dating back to the 1990s were neatly showed on the wall of the corridor. There were also portraits of successive directors of the Department of Ophthalmology hanging on the walls, recording the efforts and inheritance of several generations of German ophthalmologists. Mainz is a city with a population of only 220,000. When Prof. Pfeiffer came to Mainz in the early 1990s, the Department of Ophthalmology was still a relatively small department in the hospital. Under his long-term leadership, it has developed into the third-largest ophthalmology center in Germany, receiving 80,000 patients every year, and providing medical care for patients coming from the whole Germany and other countries. The department has outstanding advantages in glaucoma treatment, retinal surgery, and corneal surgery. Its corneal bank is the largest in Germany and even in Europe. In terms of scientific research, the Department of Ophthalmology is also one of the top two research centers in Germany. When talking about the development of the hospital itself, Prof. Pfeiffer mentioned that, as one of the largest university hospitals in Germany, the University Medical Center Mainz serves a population of about 5 million. During his tenure, he successfully secured 2.3 billion euros for the redevelopment of the university hospital campus. He also introduced that the University Medical Center Mainz and its medical school were founded in 1477, and long before that, there were already people practicing medicine on this land. During the archaeological excavation at the current site of the university hospital, cultural relics from the Roman period 2000 years ago were discovered, including four stone seals. One of the seals discovered only 150 meters away from Prof. Pfeiffer's office is now on display in his office. It is engraved with Latin words, meaning the medicine for treating trachoma and three kinds of raw materials. This is regarded as "evidence" that Mainz was an important center for ophthalmology thousands of years ago. During our conversation, a special portrait attracted our attention. Prof. Pfeiffer introduced that it was the portrait of Albrecht von Graefe, the founder of the German Society of Ophthalmology(DOG). He founded the DOG in 1863, and this society is also the earliest-established medical professional society in the world. Prof. von Graefe is regarded as the father of ophthalmology, and Germany is also the birthplace of ophthalmology. Below the portrait is his autograph from 170 years ago, and there are still water stains on the paper. Prof. Pfeiffer treasures this very much and regards it as an important witness to the history of ophthalmology. In addition, Prof. Pfeiffer also handed over a visiting fellow certificate to us. It was issued by him for Doctor SHEN Yongzhi from the Shunde Hospital of Southern Medical University. Doctor Shen conducted a six-month visiting fellowship in his department last year. In November this year, Prof. Pfeiffer will be invited to visit China to participate in the 5th Sino-Euro Global Forum on Hospital Management, Specialty Construction & Talent Cultivation 2025, and preside over the hospital management session to share his long-term experience in managing university hospital. The meeting lasted for one and a half hours. At the end of the meeting, Prof. Pfeiffer personally took us to the rooftop of the building of the Department of Ophthalmology to overlook the entire University Medical Center Mainz and the city. The weather was clear and bright, and the high-rise buildings in Frankfurt in the distance were vaguely visible. Prof. Pfeiffer said that it is extremely difficult to retain a medical building complex of such a scale in the core area of a German city. This visit is not just an academic exchange, but also an in-depth dialogue at the intersection of history, reality, and the future.
