The Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University (Academy of Orthopaedics, Guangdong Province, Orthopaedic Hospital of Guangdong Province) is a Grade III Class A comprehensive hospital integrating medical care, education, scientific research, and health management. In recent years, under the leadership of Prof. HU Haiyuan, Party Secretary of the hospital and Prof. LI Cheng, Hospital President, the hospital has actively promoted an internationalization strategy, continuously strengthened hospital management, specialty construction and the high-level talent cultivation, and steadfastly implemented the development approach of "bringing in and going global", benchmarking itself against world-class medical institutions. In 2025, the hospital selected three outstanding surgeons for a six-month fellowship in Europeto further expand their international perspectives and enhance their clinical and research expertise. On the early morning of March 1, Dr. YANG Cheng, Deputy Chief Physician of the Department of Trauma Orthopedics and Dr. SONG Zhenhua, Deputy Chief Physician of the Department of Neurosurgery departed from Guangzhou to Frankfurt, Germany, officially starting their fellowship at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG).Dr. Song is studying and observing within the neurosurgery team under the supervision of Prof. Rohde, former President of the German Society of Neurosurgery and the Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Medical Center Göttingen. He shared that the host team has been holding the daily morning meeting in English for better communication, which deeply moved him and made him feel respected. Dr. Yang joined the team led by Prof. Lehmann, the President-elect of the German Society for Trauma Surgery 2027 and the Director of the Department of Trauma Surgery, Orthopedics, and Plastic Surgery at the University Medical Center Göttingen. On the first day, he experienced the rigor and efficiency of German university hospitals: the grand morning meeting at 7:30 a.m., imaging interpretation, internal lectures, followed by various advanced surgeries, and the preoperative planing meeting for the next day's surgeries in the afternoon. He noted that the surgical instruments, intraoperative imaging, rehabilitation facilities, and even the use of advanced implants in Germany were truly impressive, while in some core skills such as microsurgery and minimally invasive screw insertion, Chinese surgeons are equally on par with international standards. Every day, Dr. Yang participates in ward rounds and surgeries, working alongside team members to gain an in-depth understanding of German diagnostic protocols, treatment concepts, and surgical techniques. On June 1, Dr. ZHAO Liang, Deputy Chief Physician of the Department of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery will also depart from Guangzhou to Bologna, Italy, to visit the prestigious Rizzoli Orthopaedics Institute and have his fellowship under the team of Dr. Guerra, the director of the Department of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. The international talent cultivation strategy is not only an important practice for the hospital to align with world-class hospitals but also a significant leap in the professional growth of the surgeons. By "going global," the hospital continue to absorb advanced concepts and technologies, supporting the construction of a high-level medical platform, and enabling more patients to benefit from more precise and more patient-centered healthcare of higher quality. The future is here, and The Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University is advancing steadily toward greater heights.
