From December 11th to 15th 2023, the internationally renowned master and a pioneer in Germany in Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. Olms revisited the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University as an international visiting professor. He carried out a series of academic exchange activities in the hospital, including outpatient clinics, ward rounds, surgical guidance, training within the department, discussion on department management, discussion on key and difficult cases, open master lectures, etc.
The 2nd Visit to the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University
On the morning of December 11th, Dr. Olms arrived at the Hand, Foot and Ankle Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, and had a meeting with Director LI Wencui and her team. This was the second time for Dr. Olms to visit the hospital. The team of Director LI Wencui gave a warm welcome to Dr. Olms and introduced the development and changes in the department for the past six months.
Later, Dr. Olms had an in-depth discussion with the team about difficult cases such as bone cysts of the sesamoid, sharing opinions on diagnosis and treatment.
In the afternoon, Dr. Olms visited the OR, observed the surgery on the bone cyst of the sesamoid performed by Director Li, and provided guidance in the OR.
Cases Discussion
On the morning of December 12th, Dr. Olms shared his experience on treatment such as reduction for Pilon fracture surgery and treatment for club foot with Director LIU Jianquan of the Hand, Foot and Ankle Department of the hospital and took part in the consultation for patients.
In the afternoon, the team of Director Li also shared difficult cases in the past six months, benefiting from the discussion and conclusion with Dr. Olms.
Consultation and Professional Guidance
On the morning of December 13th, Dr. Olms conducted a consultation and offered guidance for treatment on difficult cases such as diabetic foot, flat foot, club foot, Achilles tendon injury, Pilon fracture, calcaneal fracture, talus fracture, infection after arthroscopic repair of talus cartilage, etc.
In the afternoon, Dr. Olms delivered a lecture on the treatment for hallux varus and its complications. In the lecture, Dr. Olms classified the treatments for different kinds of hallux varus complications and pointed out the possible causes for the complications, the strategies for revision surgery, and the causes for the relapse after correcting surgery for the hallux varus. At the end of the lecture, the Hand, Foot and Ankle Surgery team of the hospital proposed questions and had discussions on the treatment of hallux varus complications with Dr. Olms.
Surgical Guidance
On the morning of December 14th, Dr. Olms observed the open reduction internal fixation of calcaneal fracture surgery performed by Director Liu and provided surgical guidance.
In the afternoon, Dr. Olms had discussions with the team members in the department on difficult cases such as the treatment of fibular chondroma, relapse and concurrence of local collapse after repair for rupture of the Achilles tendon, ankle arthroplasty, etc.
Master Lectures
On December 15th, Dr. Olms gave master lectures on talus fracture and Lisfranc fracture, introducing the topics from anatomical structure, pathological mechanism, fracture classification, diagnosis, surgical approach, intraoperative precautions, etc. Then, he provided related cases of talus fracture and Lisfranc fracture and had discussions with the team members in the department.
In this one-week-long guiding project, as a visiting professor, Dr. Olms engaged in the discussion on foot and ankle cases with the Hand, Foot and Ankle Surgery Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, providing his opinions for consultation and offering guidance for treatment on difficult cases such as diabetic foot, flat foot, club foot, Achilles tendon injury, Pilon fracture, calcaneal fracture, talus fracture, infection after repair of talus cartilage, etc.
Besides, Dr. Olms also observed and provided guidance for open reduction internal fixation of calcaneal fracture and Pilon fracture, and ankle arthroplasty performed by Director Li and Director Liu.
Dr. Olms also gave master lectures on hallux varus and its complications, talus fracture, Lisfranc fracture, etc. By discussing the epidemiological character, the surgery experience, and related case sharing, Dr. Olms helped the Hand, Foot and Ankle Department of the hospital to command a better and more detailed diagnosis and treatment standard for the related injuries.
Dr. Olms’ visit to the Department has not only brought standardized ideas for clinical diagnosis and treatment but also a deepening relationship through academic exchanges. This visit has come to an end, but there will be extended online discussions and exchanges on related academic topics. Combining with both online and offline academic exchanges, Dr. Olms is hoping that these activities could help the Hand, Foot and Ankle Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University to have a breakthrough on its already exquisite diagnosis and treatment level.
