This is a true story from the Republic of China era. The Pacific War broke out in 1941. She was 24 years old, a doctor at the Eighth Route Army Office in Zengjiayan, Chongqing. He was 32 years old, an investigator serving close to the Japanese Emperor. In fact, he was a Communist agent who had infiltrated the The National Bureau of Investigation and Statistics (NBIS), which had in turn arranged for him to infiltrate Japan and become a member of the upper echelons of the military. The Attack on Pearl Harbor took place in 1941. In 1942, the United States was preparing to bomb Tokyo and sent an envoy to China, asking the Quzhou Airfield to provide an alternate landing site for all the American pilots after their bombing mission over Tokyo. The envoy’s aircraft was shot down by the Japanese military over Sanzao Island in Zhuhai. All the pilots on board were killed. Seriously wounded, the envoy parachuted onto Sanzao Island with this important intelligence and was rescued by local residents. In response to this extremely urgent situation, the Communist Party sent these two strangers, who had never met before, to Sanzao Island to carry out this particularly dangerous mission. As Sanzao Island was a Japanese naval base at the time, the two of them had to take the envoy to western Zhejiang and deliver the intelligence to the Nationalist government. This was an instance of cooperation between the Communist Party and the Nationalist government in the common fight against the Japanese invasion. She received only basic training in Zaozilanya, Chongqing, and then went to Shanghai to meet him. He flew from Tokyo to Shanghai. NBIS informed him that once the mission was completed, he had to kill her immediately. As soon as she arrived on the island, she was captured. Her father and elder brother were both killed by the Japanese because of this mission. For this mission, it was either life or death. They went through one danger and difficulty after another, walking on the edge of death every day. Their first attempt to evacuate with the envoy failed. The second time, they planned to evacuate with the envoy to Shanghai first, but she chose to stay behind. She wanted to rescue the local people on the island. In the end, however, the envoy was killed by the Japanese in Shanghai. He had already successfully escaped back to Shanghai, but he chose to return from Shanghai to Sanzao Island once again to save her from danger. On their third attempt, the two of them tried to evacuate by plane together with the intelligence. During the evacuation, the Japanese bombed the aircraft. There was only one life jacket on board, and he gave the only life jacket to her so that she could survive. In the end, the plane exploded, and he was killed, his life ending at the age of 32. During this extremely difficult mission, the two of them had fallen deeply in love. On April 18, 1942, 80 American pilots bombed Tokyo in what became known as the famous “Doolittle Raid.” In the end, only 64 American pilots successfully made it home. That day, all the searchlights at Quzhou Airfield were turned on, because she had successfully parachuted on her own and arrived at Quzhou Airfield in time to receive the American pilots. Because of the great efforts made by Chinese soldiers and civilians to rescue the American pilots, the Japanese eventually massacred 250,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians in western Zhejiang. China at that time had reached the brink of national destruction. The mountains and rivers were broken, and the nation was in turmoil. What were the young people of the 1940s doing at that time? They were doing everything they could for their country, for resistance against Japan, and for the ordinary people. In 1944, she also died behind enemy lines. She lived only until the age of 26. At that time, she had studied medicine in the United States. After returning to China, she went to Yan'an for her ideals, and then went to Chongqing. Neither of them lived to see the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. On October 1, 2026, it will be National Day once again, and our New China will have been founded for 77 years.
