From March 11th to March 16th, 2019, Prof. Dr. med. Hermann Otto Mayr， an international sports medicine master, was employed by Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM, which was regarded as the first traditional Chinese medicine hospital in South China. He worked at this hospital for one week, including outpatient clinic, ward rounds, surgery instructs, procedures, conduct training for the team, discussion on the management of the department, complicated case discussion and open classes, etc.

A Simple but Solemn Welcome Ceremony
On the morning of March 11th , President Dacan Chen, Vice President Jun Liu, Director Xuewei Cao,etc. held a simple but solemn welcome ceremony for Prof. Mayr. After that, they respectively introduced Schön Klinik München Harlaching and Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM to each other in detail. Prof. Maryr told colleagues of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM about his working experience, management structure, working requirements, treatment methods and matters needed attention during postoperative rehabilitation at Schön Klinik München Harlaching.

Prof. Mayr said at Schön Klinik München Harlaching, his department had employed three professional consultants of knee, hip and shoulder.
After that, following heads of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM, Prof. Mayr visited the hospital and met doctors and staff of Joint Department, learning about the situation of Joint Department and visiting the operation room.
Outpatient Clinic
On the morning of March 12th, Director Cao of Joint Department of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM, led Prof. Mayr to walk around the wards.Prof. Mayr and Diretor Cao were inspecting the patient who had done knee replacement surgery.
After that, Prof. Mayr went to the outpatient clinic of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM. Many patients came to this hospital after hearing Prof. Mayr’s coming. Among all patients, one of them was an overseas Chinese who came from South Africa. The patient’s families even hoped that Prof. Mayr could do surgery for the patient. When they heard that Prof. Mayr would come here again for a week in September, they felt they were so lucky that they could meet Prof. Mayr again.
After finishing the work at outpatient clinic, Prof. Mayr walked around the wards to see the patients who would be operated on that day. These patients expressed that they were so lucky to have an international kee expert instructing the surgeries. At first, when they heard that they had to undergo surgeries, they felt restless, but now they could be easy.
On this day, no matter facing to outpatients or facing to inpatients, Prof. Mayr were very patient and gave detailed treatment methods.
As Primary Surgeon in a TKA Surgery
On the morning of March 13th , after ward rounds, Prof. Mayr arrived at the operation room at 9:00a.m. The first and the second surgeries were TKA surgeries. Prof. Mayr was the primary surgeon.
Doctors and nurses there showed their appreciation to Prof. Mayr because his surgeries were very standard. They thought Prof. Mayr was so serious that any details were perfect, especially during suture, he was also prudential. The whole process of surgery was fluent, which showed Germans’ rigorous characteristic and their habits of pursuing perfection.
Ward Rounds & Complicated Case Discussion
At 7:30a.m on March 14th , with the company of doctors from Joint Department, Prof. Mayr walked around the two wards where had the patients who was operated on yesterday. The first day after surgery, two patients got well. Though without using tourniquet, two patients had no bleeding.
The patients said that they had a nice dream last night, appreciating Prof. Mayr, and thought that they were so lucky that could be done surgeries by an international sports medicine master.
Ward rounds after surgery
After ward rounds, Prof. Mayr went to the operation room to do surgery without rest. The first surgery was charged by Prof. Mayr. After that, he visited two surgeries, one of them was charged by Director Cao. He praised that Director Cao’s performance was very excellent.
In the afternoon, Prof. Mayr discussed complicated cases with doctors and nurses of Orthopedics Department of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM. Prof. Mayr showed two cases for them, one of which was a very complicated but very interesting. All doctors and nurses of the department joined the discussions actively. The atmosphere of this faced- to-faced communication gained attendees’ appreciation.
The First Time to Experience Traditional Chinese Medicine
Yesterday, Prof. Mayr caught a cold and had a fever, not having a good rest at night so he looked tired today. Knowing Prof. Mayr’s situation, Director Cao proposed to treat him with acupuncture.
After that, Director Cao did a blood-letting therapy for Prof. Mayr. Quickly, Prof. Mayr said his headache had relieved and swallowing wasn’t so painful. At noon, his fever also abated.
Experiencing Acupuncture and Blood-letting Treatment
Prof. Mayr said that this was his first attempt at Chinese acupuncture. He lamented that Chinese medicine was amazing. He also said that he could accept traditional Chinese medicine treatment from the bottom of his heart. Prof. Mayr praised that Director Cao's acupuncture technique was particularly powerful, and he was grateful to Director Cao for applying acupuncture treatment.
In the afternoon, Prof. Mayr performed a total knee replacement surgery and did the suturing. This time, Prof. Mayr made a total of 4 TKA operations in the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, all of which were performed on his own. He explained the procedure to the doctors while doing surgeries.
These days, the surgeons who have done surgeries with Prof. Mayr felt that Prof. Mayr was serious and meticulous in his operations. His surgical technique was perfect and he deserved the title as an international sports medicine master.
In Germany, he arrives at the hospital at 6am, goes to the operating room at 7am, and then works until 11pm. Prof. Mayr got sick these days, but still insisted to arrive at the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine at 7:30am every morning to see the patients and perform surgeries.
Prof. Mayr has always adhered to the patient-centered purpose. He was ill but still selflessly standing on the front line of medical treatment. His noble personality, good medical ethics and superb medical skills have been recognized by Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
After the operation, President Dacan Chen, President Jun Liu, Director Dingkun Lin and Director Xuewei Cao from the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine summarized the week-long work of Prof. Mayr as a visiting professor, and proceeded to the next step in the second half of Mayr’s work as a visiting professor in September.
Opening Ceremony of China Association for Disaster & Emergency Rescue Medicine, Sports Injury Branch, Joint Sports Injury Group and Sino-German Communication Center for Sports Medicine
On March 16th, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine held in the inaugural ceremony of the China Association for Disaster & Emergency Rescue Medicine, Sports Injury Branch, Joint Sports Injury Group and the unveiling ceremony of the Sino-German Communication Center for Sports Medicine .

At this meeting, a number of sports medicine and joint experts from home and abroad gathered together to discuss the latest progress in the field of joint and sports medicine with the aim of “saving lives and reducing disability”. The blueprint for the future development of talent training and technology promotion was planned.

The establishment of the Joint Sports Injuries Group has for the first time linked the degenerative diseases of the joints to the sports traumatic diseases, and will form a professional diagnosis and treatment system to protect the lives and health of the people. At the same time, the Joint Sports Injuries Group has rooted in the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which also marked the next step in the exchange and cooperation between Chinese and Western medicine. In order to solve the actual medical problems, they will make more systematic integration and build a more perfect medical model.
The meeting also commended Prof. Mayr, Director of Joint Department from Shoen Klinik, and thanked Prof. Mayr for a one-week academic exchange at the Third Orthopedic Department in Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM.

Subsequently, the former President of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine Yubo Lv, Director Bolai Chen and the Prof. Maryr from Shoen Klinik, held a simple but exceptional opening ceremony for the establishment of Sino-German Communication Center for Sports Medicine.
Unveiling Ceremony of Sino-German Communication Center for Sports Medicine
The establishment of the center has built a platform for technical exchanges at home and abroad, so that the medical technology of joint in China can directly meet the international advanced level and continuously improve the domestic medical level. At the same time, the platform also opens a window for the world to better understand China. Through this "window", China's Chinese and Western medical technology will be promoted abroad, and it will promote the domestic technology to the world stage.
Prof. Mayr was giving a presentation on “Technical Mistakes Leading to Early Failure in TKA”.

Zilian Li, Deputy Director of Traditional Chinese Medicine Bureau of Guangdong Province, spoke highly of the Sino-German Communication Center for Sports Medicine project of the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He hoped that the center and the platform of the society will enable China to understand the world and let the world know about the new China, understand traditional Chinese medicine, and make the technology of excellent Chinese and Western medicine benefit both China and other countries.
